Choosing an electric blanket: a practical checklist
From mattress size to separate controls, these are the details to check when choosing an electric underblanket.
An electric underblanket sits between the mattress and the sheet, which makes size and fit the first things to get right. Everything else, from heat settings to controllers, comes after you know the blanket will lie flat and stay put.
Start with the mattress, not the room
Measure your mattress before choosing a size. Single and Double are the common options for underblankets; King availability varies by product. We have deliberately not published centimetre measurements, because we have not verified them for the exact products we intend to sell. Check the seller's own size chart and match it to your mattress.
- Measure width and length, not the divan or bed frame
- Check the maximum mattress depth the topper is designed for
- Check the intended heated area and follow the model's fitting instructions
Think about who sleeps in the bed
If two people share a bed and prefer different levels of warmth, separate controls let each person choose a setting for their side. The Supreme reference has two controllers on Double and one on Single. Confirm the supplied model's controls before purchase.
Decide how much control you want
Heat settings are the simplest way to compare models. Three settings suit someone who wants a warm bed without fiddling. Nine settings suit someone who wants finer control, or two people who want their own side set differently. More settings are not automatically better if you never adjust them.
Fitting and care
Look for elasticated corner straps, which keep an underblanket from bunching. A removable cover that can be washed makes the blanket easier to keep fresh, since it lives directly under the sheet. Follow the manufacturer's care label for washing temperature and drying, and detach the controller and cables as instructed before any wash.
- Elasticated straps hold the topper in place
- A removable, washable cover is easier to maintain
- Follow the care label rather than assuming a wash temperature
What we will not guess at
Some numbers are easy to quote and hard to stand behind. We are not publishing running-cost estimates, because they depend on your tariff and how you use the blanket. We are not making overnight-use or therapeutic claims. We are not claiming safety certifications for stock until the exact product and paperwork are confirmed. When those details are verified, they will appear on the product page.
